Alexis de TocquevilleInspiring Hope and Creating Lasting Change

"When an American asks for the cooperation of his fellow citizens, it is seldom refused; and I have often seen it afforded spontaneously & with great good will."
-Alexis de Tocqueville, "Democracy in America"

The Tocqueville Society of United Way of the Greater Dayton Area was founded in 1986 to recognize and encourage exemplary leadership gifts by individuals who generously donated $10,000 or more. The society is named for Alexis de Tocqueville, the nineteenth century French aristocrat who wrote "Democracy in America." In this work, Tocqueville declared his admiration for the American philanthropic spirit, which he believed to be one of our country's greatest assets.
