Press Release
United Way Reinvents Reality

September 10, 2010, Dayton, Ohio - United Way of the Greater Dayton Area’s 2010 Campaign launches tonight, Friday September 10th at 5:00 pm in conjunction with Urban Nights.  The kick-off -- to be held in downtown Dayton’s Schuster Performing Arts Center’s Wintergarden --  includes the premiere of the organization’s new Campaign Video, announcement of the 2010 fundraising goal, and introduction of the Campaign’s co-chairs.

The Campaign goal is $9 million, which is half a million dollars more than was raised last year.  The focus will be on increased participation from individuals and companies.  In an homage to our area’s rich history in invention, the overall theme for the Campaign and organization as a whole will be “Reinvent.”  “Reinvent Hope,” “Reinvent Community,” and “Reinvent Reality” all reflect the need to think and act in new and different ways to sustain United Way’s services addressing education, income, and health in these trying times.

United Way of the Greater Dayton Area has brought together executives from two major rival local institutions who have decided to forego competition in favor of collaboration in serving as co-chairs for the 2010 Campaign.  They are Roy Chew of Kettering Health Network and Mark Shaker of Good Samaritan Hospital, member of Premier Health Partners.

Roy G. Chew is the President of Kettering Medical Center.  Kettering Medical Center includes Kettering Memorial Hospital, Sycamore Hospital, Kettering College, Kettering Behavioral Medicine Center, Sycamore Glen Retirement Center, and Sycamore Glen Health Center.   Dr. Chew holds a B.S. in Respiratory Therapy from the University of Missouri, a M.S. in Education from the University of Dayton, and a Ph.D. in Administration and Policy Analysis from Stanford University.

Mark Shaker is President and CEO of Good Samaritan Hospital and Samaritan Health Partners.  Mark is a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives, holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Business Administration from The Ohio State University and a Master’s of Health Administration from Washington University.
