Press Release
Community Support Stabilizes United Way Campaign and Agency Funding

March 17, 2011, Dayton, Ohio - United Way of the Greater Dayton Area announced this morning that it has raised $8.4 million to date in the public phase of the 2010-2011 campaign.  With some company campaigns, special gifts, and grants still pending, United Way officials anticipate the final total to match last year's level of $8.5 million by the June 30th end of their fiscal year.

The organization focused on increased participation from individuals and companies for this year’s campaign.  Campaign co-chair Roy Chew – Executive Vice President of Kettering Health Network said this strategy paid off, ”With all that our community has dealt with over the last few years, we were especially appreciative that eight companies were able to raise $10,000 more than last year with an additional sixteen companies seeing $5,000 plus growth.”

Campaign co-chair Mark Shaker, President and CEO of Good Samaritan Hospital and Samaritan Health Partners, added, “Organizations of all sizes contributed to the success of this year’s campaign.  Thirty-three companies – large and small – increased their campaigns by 30% or more.  And 35 companies ran campaigns for the very first time.”

This campaign marks the first time in a decade that the nonprofit organization has not seen a decline in donations.  With additional cost reductions and positive pledge collections from the 2009 campaign, United Way program funding will continue at the same level in the coming year.  The stable funding comes at a critical juncture as United Way and the partner agencies delivered services to nearly 100,000 more people last year and significant government cutbacks are occurring.

The announcement of no decrease in allocations is especially welcome news to the funded agencies.  Due to the severe economic decline and increased donor-directed gifts, the allocable pool was cut 24% and 12% in the last two years respectively. United Way had mitigated earlier and deeper cuts by tapping into reserves to sustain vital services while demand was increasing.  No reserves will be needed to maintain funding at the current level.

At a recognition event held this morning at Sinclair Community College, recognition was given to those companies who grew their campaigns as well as to company campaign coordinators who were especially creative and/or diligent in their efforts.  A special Honorary Life Membership was awarded to Reverend Wayne Morrison of the First Presbyterian Church in Eaton for his more than 20-year service as a United Way volunteer.  Morrison is only the fifth person to receive this honor.
