Day of Action 2011 Draws More Volunteers than Ever
 
June 8, 2011, Dayton, Ohio - United Way of the Greater Dayton Area’s Volunteer Connection will mobilize more than 600 people in our area to participate in Day of Action.  Volunteers will work on various projects throughout Montgomery and Greene County on June 9th and June 10th and in Preble County on June 16th and 17th.

United Way’s Day of Action is an annual day of volunteerism mobilizing hundreds of local volunteers to complete community service projects.  Last year’s event attracted 376 volunteers who contributed 1,639 hours of service. Volunteers are individuals and groups from local companies, organizations, and the community. 

This year’s volunteers come from Battelle, Berry Network, CareSource, Cemex, Chapel Electric, Coldwell Banker, Deloitte, Eaton Community Schools, GE Aviation, GE Money, Harding Place, Henny Penny, Hilton Garden Inn, Parker Hannifin, Silfex, Teradata, Thorn, Lewis & Duncan, The Timken Company, University of Dayton, Vectren, Women’s Recovery Center, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, and the community.

Projects include such activities as neighborhood clean-ups, landscaping, festival preparations, clothes-sorting, etc. for nonprofit organizations including  Aullwood, Bellbrook Family Resource Center, Community Action Partnership, Compassion 1st, Dayton Christian Center, Fairborn FISH, Graceworks, Kid’s Learning Place, L&M Products, Preble County Council on Aging, Preble County YWCA Shelter Services, Premier Community Health, Ronald McDonald House, Salem Avenue Business District, St. Vincent de Paul, and Xenia Adult Recreation & Services Center.

Most of this year’s volunteers will be seen wearing United Way’s LIVE UNITED shirts.  The shirts were donated by Dayton Power & Light.

In addition to Day of Action, United Way of the Greater Dayton Area’s Volunteer Connection also coordinates Join Hands Miami Valley, Global Youth Service Day, and 9/11 National Day of Service.  They plan to add another community-wide day of service in conjunction with Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
